Savener has successfully completed the execution phases of the heating and cooling generation systems, together with the main distribution rings, at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital in Seville. All that remains to be done now is the hydraulic connection to the General Hospital to complete this ambitious project, which stands out as one of the largest district cooling & heating systems for hospital use in Europe.

Innovation in cooling generation with magnetic levitation technology

The new cooling generation system is based 100% on chiller plants equipped with Danfoss Turbocor® magnetic levitation compressors, leaders in energy efficiency and sustainability. The installation includes seven chiller plants – five air-cooled and two water-cooled – providing a total installed capacity of 10.72 MW. This system not only maximises operational efficiency, but also minimises environmental impact, making it the largest magnetically levitated chiller plant in Europe.

The energy generated is distributed through an innovative cooling ring, consisting of pre-insulated black steel pipes with high-density polyethylene exterior cladding and polyurethane interior insulation. This design ensures efficient and safe heat transfer to the various buildings of the hospital complex, including the General Hospital, the Rehabilitation and Traumatology Hospital, the Women’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital.

Modernisation of the thermal power plant: efficiency and sustainability

Modernisation of the thermal power plant: efficiency and sustainability

In parallel, Savener has executed the optimisation and replacement of the hospital’s thermal power plant. The old boilers have been replaced by new high-performance equipment with modulating control, adapted to meet the real thermal energy demand of the complex. In addition, heat recovery systems have been incorporated from the combustion fumes, which increases energy efficiency and contributes to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions.

A commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency

Both projects have received a joint investment of more than 16 million euros, 80% financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 20% by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), as part of a global strategy to improve the energy rating of hospital buildings and reduce their carbon footprint.

This set of actions positions the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital as a benchmark in technological innovation and sustainability in the hospital field.

Savener thus reaffirms its commitment to the development of advanced and efficient solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
